More magical than the world of miniature animals, more exciting than photography, perhaps, and certainly as touching to the soul as music.
For me, being an artist has always come naturally to me and I am multi-gifted.
But it wasn't until I picked up a lump of clay and began to create that I realised this was me. This was my calling, my gift, my dream. While life requires my time, sculpting still remains one of my most loved passions.
I believe it is the act of creating something from nothing that inspires me the most. The feel of the clay, wet and smooth, as it forms itself between my hands. The strokes of patience, a creation of time - all of which reminds me what care, what skill God created with. There, back then, in the garden - forming man from mud.
I believe this is why I sculpt. It is the act of creating. Forming. Shaping. Being.
For as long as I can remember, music has touched my soul. Music has the ability to express what words cannot, in a way that stirs the heart, awakens, and embraces.
I cannot explain what it is within me that leaps when I hear soul music - music that is written or sung by those during a crisis, during the heartbreak, during the pain. It is, perhaps, the emotion in it that grips me - and will not let go.
Singing is a way to voice this pain, this joy, this emotion. Singing is a passion and a gifting of mine I have long been acquainted with, alongside song writing. For me, the two go hand in hand, and it seems to me the greatest challenge to be able to sing a song in the right emotion - with feeling and truth behind it.
When I sing, I want to be able to convey this emotion - the meaning, the truth behind the lyrics, behind the music, behind the story being told.
Photography - the Art of Seeing. Photography has long been a passion of mine and I have spent countless hours engrossed in different methods of photographing one thing.
To me, photography is all about perspective and our own way of vision - not someone else's.
That's what makes a photo different to posed booth shots - it is captured, thought out or perhaps simply taken for its beauty by the person seeing it - through their eyes. No two people see the same - and this is why photography holds such an important place in the world. Like art, photography really is a creative way to express the way we see the world.
It is about capturing light, colour, change, the ordinary and the extraordinary for me. It is raw emotion, simplicity and contrast, relationship and uniqueness. It is capturing the beauty in that thought ugly - seeing the unseen. It is about transporting the viewer to a place not yet experienced, capturing the imagination, being swept along my something magical.
It is how we see things.
Drawing, writing, sketching. This aspect of art has been a part of my life since I was very young - the early days of an artist.
I have always been self-taught at most things, especially art, and this has been something I was just able to pick up. Shapes, forms, lines, circles, softness and movement just come to me in the form of drawing.
Sketching is a beautiful form of unfinished art - which really does not need to be finished. That is the beauty of drawing.
